چکیده

The three factors which catalyse thrombus formation and intravascular coagulation are changes in the rate of blood flow, changes in the vessel wall, and changes in the nature of the blood. These factors, which were enumerated over a hundred years ago by Rudolph Virchow,47 are still our main guide lines. The various causes of changes in blood flow are well known. The antithrombotic properties of the vein wall may be altered by local trauma, and intimal damage is positively thrombogenic. The changes in the blood include changes of viscosity, fibrinogen level, antifibrinolysis, platelet stickiness, and the concentration of the coagulation factors. All current forms of prophylaxis attempt to change one or other of these three supposedly important predisposing condi-

Periodontal Pockets as a Potential Source of Infection: a Case of Possible Odontogenic Septic Pulmonary Embolism

Although dental foci can be sources of bacteremia and bacterial endocarditis, hematogenous spread of infection presented with septic pulmonary embolism apparently is rare. The occurrence of septic pulmonary embolism in patients with periodontal disease without suppurative thrombophlebitis of the great vessels of the neck is well documented but to our knowledge, there is no report on septic pulm...

Aspirin: An Alternative for Pulmonary Embolism Prophylaxis Following Arthroplasty

Introduction: The most effective agent for prophylaxis against venous thromboembolic disease (VTE) following total joint arthroplasty (TJA) remains unknown. The paucity of literature comparing the different methods of pulmonary embolus (PE) prophylaxis and fear of litigation make it difficult for surgeons to abandon the use of aggressive chemical prophylaxis. The purpose of our study is to comp...

Fatal vascular outcomes following major orthopedic surgery.

Major orthopedic surgery is known to be associated with potentially serious arterial and venous vascular complications, although uncertainty exists about current event rates. Using electronic databases and investigator contact, we identified randomized and cohort studies reporting overall mortality and fatal vascular events. Where possible, studies reporting high autopsy rates (>60%) were exami...

In this study a patient with pulmonary embolism is reported in which the patient exhibited two unusual manifestations namely; right upper quadrant abdominal pain and ST-T elevation in anterior precordial leads. Due to the ...

Deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism in the Chinese population.

Deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism is a well-recognised major health problem in the West. There is a deep-rooted belief among clinicians that deep vein thrombosis is rare in Asians, particularly in the Chinese population. However, it appears that the incidence of venous thrombosis and pulmonary embolism is increasing in Chinese patients. Prophylaxis reduces the incidence of venous thro...
